How to Keep Your Espresso Machine Working Like a Champ (So It Stays Out of Our Workshop)

If you’ve invested in a good espresso machine, you want it to keep pulling great shots—not breaking down in the middle of your busiest day. At MVM Technical Services, we see many of the same mistakes that lead to unnecessary repairs, time off the machine, and extra costs. Here are some pro tips to help you maintain yours, so you get more uptime and better coffee.

Why Maintenance Matters

Even the best machines suffer from wear and tear—but a lot of the problems we fix could’ve been prevented. Regular care reduces repair bills, preserves flavour, and ensures consistent performance. Think of this as preventative engineering for your coffee setup.

Top Tips to Extend Machine Life

Here’s what we strongly recommend:

  1. Back-flushing is non-negotiable
If your machine has a three-way valve or solenoid, use that blind portafilter (or cleaning/basket disc) to back-flush every day. Flush with plain water first, then once a week, use a dedicated espresso cleaner. This helps remove residues, oils, and buildup behind the group head and valves. Over time, without this, buildup causes pressure drops, slower extraction, inconsistent shots, and costly wear.

  2. Use good water
Water quality is one of the biggest “under-the-hood” killers of espresso machines. Hard water leads to scale; untreated water leads to corrosion or performance issues. If possible, use RO or softened water that meets recommended specs. Replace water filters or cartridges regularly. It’s not just about machine life—it affects your shot flavour too.

  3. Keep the workspace clean & climate controlled
Dust, spilled grounds, milk residue, and humidity all take a toll. A clean machine surface and environment protect electronics, gaskets, and piping. Also: avoid temperature extremes. Heat stresses seals; cold can cause condensation or contraction problems.

  4. Understand your machine and troubleshoot early
Learn how your particular model (brand, boiler type, valves, etc.) works. Don’t wait for things to get bad. If shot flow slows, or steam output drops, check basics: water supply, valves, screen cleanliness, gasket condition. Early detection prevents major fixes.

  5. Have a weekly mini-maintenance routine
Dedicate 5–10 minutes weekly to things like: cleaning the shower screen, purging steam wand, checking water hardness or filter health, inspecting grinder burrs and dose distribution. A little attention here saves tonnes of repair time.

Common Issues & Quick Fixes

Here are problems we deal with often at MVM, plus how to catch them fast:

Problem

What often causes it

What to check & fix

Slow / weak espresso

Buildup in group head, blocked shower screen, stale or oily puck, wrong grind

Clean screen, change basket, adjust grind, back-flush more frequently

Weak or no steam

Blocked steam wand tip, scale or blockage inside wand, low boiler pressure

Purge wand, clean tip, check boiler pressure/readings, descale if needed

Leaks or seepage

Gasket wear, improperly seated seals, cracked parts

Inspect seals, replace worn gaskets early, ensure all fittings are tight

Off flavour or inconsistent shots

Poor water quality, dirty machine parts, variable temperature, old beans

Filter/change water, clean group head/shower screen, check temperature stability, use fresh beans

Technical Best Practices from MVM’s Bench

Since we’re technical services, here are some deeper considerations for maintaining machine performance long-term:

  • Temperature monitoring & calibration: Ensure your boiler(s) hold temperature within spec. Use thermometers or built-in sensors, and recalibrate if fluctuations exceed tolerance.

  • Pressure profiling: If your machine supports it, monitor pressure curves during extraction. Unexpected drops or spikes usually hint at obstructions (blockages) or pump issues.

  • Pump & valve maintenance: Replace worn valves or solenoids before failure. Water hammer, hiss, or inconsistent pressure often precede major failures.

  • Scheduled servicing: Annual or bi-annual professional checks (depending on usage) to inspect internal parts, check wear on metal joints, check boiler health, heating elements, and replace any perishing components (like seals, filters, gaskets).

The MVM Routine: Weekly + Monthly Checklist

Here’s a sample checklist you (or your staff) can follow:

Interval

Action Items

Daily

Back-flush with water; purge steam wand; wipe down group head, portafilter & basket; check water supply

Weekly

Back-flush with cleaning agent; clean shower screen; inspect all seals/gaskets; check grinder for burr wear/change if needed

Monthly

Measure water hardness; replace water filter; check boiler/pressure stability; inspect valves, solenoids; test shot flow and steam output

Yearly (or >10,000 uses)

Full service: internal cleaning/descaling, check heater elements, pressure vessel, heat exchangers; replace all wear items; safety check

Bottom Line

If you want your espresso machine to stay in your kitchen (or café) instead of in the repair shop, treat it like a precision instrument—not just an appliance. With regular cleaning, proper water, quick diagnostics, and good environment care, you avoid most of the “break-downs” we at MVM Technical Services fix every week.
